Race preparation guide
Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB 2027: preparation, logistics and gear guide
Five days of racing below the north face of the Eiger, from 2027-07-14 to 2027-07-18, for the fifteenth edition. The E250 UNESCO Trail is the heaviest object on the alpine calendar: 261 km and 18,000 m of climbing, starting from Grindelwald on 2027-07-14 at 08:00, around the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage site and the largest connected glaciated area in the Alps.
Race overview
The E250 starts from Grindelwald on Wednesday 2027-07-14 at 08:00: 261 km, 18,000 m of climbing, 100M category of the UTMB World Series. At close to 70 m of gain per kilometre over a distance beyond 250 km, it is a multi-night race, in a bracket where very few European events sit. The organisers frame it around the Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage site: imposing ranges, rustic valleys and the largest connected glaciated area in the Alps.
The bulk of the event happens on Saturday 2027-07-17, with four staggered starts from Grindelwald and Burglauenen: the E101 Ultra Trail, 101 km and 6,700 m at 04:00, 100K category; the E51 Panorama Trail, 51 km and 3,100 m at 07:15, 50K category; the E35 North Face Trail, 35 km and 2,500 m at 07:35 from Burglauenen, 50K category; and the E16 Pleasure Trail, 16 km and 950 m at 09:00, 20K category. The day before, on Friday 2027-07-16, the Trail Surprise opens the weekend at 12:30: 15 km and 800 m, 20K category, on a course the organisers deliberately keep off the five established routes. A Kids Race is announced the same day, with no distance published.
This guide gives the published facts and the order of decisions. One important point: as of 2026-09-07 none of the seven races is open for registration — they show as available soon. The numbers, dates and start times, however, are published and read on the official page. The detailed agenda and the gear list are not, and are read on the official site when they land.

Logistics, gear, planning — everything you need to arrive on race day ready to perform.
Build my Prep →What you actually need to prepare
18,000 m of climbing over 261 km is an order of magnitude that changes the nature of the preparation: close to 70 m of gain per kilometre, and a duration counted in days rather than hours. The E250 is not prepared as a stretched 100-miler — it is prepared as a traverse: sleep management, eating across several nights, the ability to restart after a stop, and efficient uphill hiking over tens of cumulative hours.
The terrain is alpine in the full sense: high passes, rocky trails, possible snow patches on the high points in mid-July, and long descents that wreck the quads. String consecutive mountain days together with the full pack rather than isolated long outings; do at least one full night on the move, and one outing in a storm with the jacket you will race in. For the E101 and the E51, at 6,700 and 3,100 m of climbing, the first ascent towards Grosse Scheidegg sets the tone and is paid for if started too fast.
Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB mandatory gear
The official 2027 list is not published as of 2026-09-07; it follows UTMB World Series rules and will be checked at bib pickup. Prepare this base for a multi-day high-mountain alpine race, then align it with the official list:
- Two headlamps with spare batteries, and a way to recharge them: the E250 crosses several nights, the E101 starts at 04:00.
- Hooded waterproof jacket, long trousers or tights, gloves, hat and warm layer: above 2,000 m a July storm drops the temperature by twenty degrees in an hour.
- Water reserve of at least one litre and food for the long stretches between high-altitude aid stations.
- Charged phone, whistle, emergency blanket, elastic bandage, ID, personal cup.
- Poles if you plan to use them: the circuit rule requires keeping them from start to finish, and over 18,000 m of climbing they do not stay in the pack.
- On the E250, also plan what a multi-night race demands: spare socks, skin protection, and a sleep plan decided before the start.
The official list and any weather kits take precedence; re-read it at bib pickup.
Three gear choices for Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB
Three items for an alpine race with 18,000 m of climbing: a vest able to carry the mountain and several nights, a shoe that protects on endless descents, poles that become the runner's primary tool.
ADV Skin 12
On the E250 the vest holds two headlamps, the warm layer, the jacket and a litre of water, and must stay bearable for several days: shoulder comfort, not volume, is what decides.

Grip on rock and steep grass, forefoot protection on rocky descents, and enough cushioning for tens of hours — many E250 runners change pairs along the way.

18,000 m of climbing: poles are the primary tool, not an accessory. If you start with them, the circuit rule requires keeping them to the finish.

Logistics to solve early
Grindelwald concentrates almost everything: start of the E250, the E101, the E51, the E16, the Trail Surprise and the Kids Race, and in all likelihood the race village and bib pickup, to be confirmed on the official agenda not published as of 2026-09-07. Only the E35 starts elsewhere, in Burglauenen, down the valley and on the same railway line.
It is one of the circuit's easiest events to attend without a car: the valley is served by train, and the region's cable cars make several points of the course reachable for a supporter. The trade-off is that Grindelwald is a high-season resort in July: accommodation books up very early, and the event's five days fall in the middle of the tourist summer.
Getting to Grindelwald
The train is the best option here, which is rare on the circuit. Grindelwald is at the end of the line from Interlaken Ost, itself connected to the Swiss network from Bern, Basel, Zurich or Lucerne. From France, rail access goes through Basel or Geneva, with a change in Bern or Interlaken.
By air, Zurich, Basel-Mulhouse, Bern and Geneva are the possible entries, all followed by a train journey. By car, the road climbs to Grindelwald from Interlaken; parking in the resort in July is the thing to sort out before leaving, not on arrival. For the E35, Burglauenen is a stop on the same line, a few minutes before Grindelwald.
Sleeping in Grindelwald or in the valley
Grindelwald is the obvious base: six of the seven starts, shops, a railway station, and the least possible travel before an 04:00 start for the E101. It is also the most expensive and the most contested in July. Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Interlaken are train-connected fallbacks, with travel time to check against the earliest starts.
For the E250 the question is not just the night before: the race lasts several days and the finish can land far from the expected hour. Book a recovery night after the finish rather than counting on leaving the same day, and confirm that late arrival and bag storage during the race are possible.

Turn the guide into action
Eiger Ultra Trail by UTMB is one of the rare major alpine gatherings you reach by train and experience from a single village. The open question is the format: between the E16 and the E250 there is a factor of sixteen in distance and twenty in climbing. Open a TrailCompanion Prep from this guide to date those decisions and track the registration opening, the agenda and the official list when they land.
