Marathon du Mont-Blanc 2026 Guide: Chamonix's mythical 42 km
Marathon du Mont-Blanc remains one of the most iconic 42 km mountain races on the calendar. The official site lists the 2026 edition on Sunday, June 28 over 42 km and 2,540 m D+/-, with a limit of 2,300 runners, six start waves and a 10-hour maximum time back to Chamonix. The route begins on quicker trails before the steep technical climb to Aiguillette des Posettes, then moves through Tour, Vallorcine and La Flegere before the finish.
Race overview
This race matters because it is nothing like an extended road marathon. The organiser frames it as the highlight of the weekend, with a faster opening section, then much steeper and more technical slopes on the Posettes climb, before the long return facing the Mont Blanc range. On paper, 42 km can look readable. In practice, the mountain density and sustained climbing change the whole pacing model.
The semi-autonomous format adds another layer. You only get three full aid stations before the finish, at Tour, Vallorcine and La Flegere, and the official cut-off structure is built on those same points. That rewards runners who can stay efficient on runnable terrain without overspending, then absorb the more technical ground without falling apart in the final hour.

The best preparation combines rolling endurance, long climbing, controlled descending and full-pack rehearsal. The official page already recommends solid mountain-running experience and the ability to remain self-sufficient for several hours. In practice, that means validating your fueling between aid stations, feeling comfortable with the required minimum 0.5 L water reserve, and making sure your descending stays clean once the legs start to fade rather than focusing only on uphill speed.
Logistics to solve early
Official logistics come in two phases. First, bib pickup: appointment-only at the EMC2 space on Place du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, from Thursday June 25 to Saturday June 27 within the published opening windows. No bib is issued without photo ID and a race bag containing all compulsory equipment. Second, travel into the valley: the transport page recommends reaching Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet by SNCF, then finishing the trip on the Mont-Blanc Express, with the Leman Express as another official rail option from Geneva and nearby regions.
For accommodation, the race points runners toward partners such as Emerald Stay, Le Morgane and Les Aiglons, while also noting that the whole valley from Servoz to Vallorcine offers hotels, apartments, chalets, campsites and guest houses. The guest card issued by your accommodation provider also gives free Mont-Blanc Express travel between Servoz and Vallorcine and discounts of up to 50% on parts of the Chamonix Mobilite bus network. The practical move is therefore to lock your base, bib-pickup slot, local transport and fueling Prep early so race weekend stays simple.
Turn the guide into action
Marathon du Mont-Blanc becomes an excellent target when you respect it as a compact alpine race rather than a scenic 42 km. If your pacing, pack, Chamonix transport and aid-station plan are settled early, you can approach this classic with a real race plan instead of guesswork.
