South Downs Way 100 2026 Guide: Winchester to Eastbourne over 100 miles

South Downs Way 100 is one of the defining British 100 milers. The official 2026 edition starts on Saturday, June 13 from Matterley Bowl outside Winchester and runs to Eastbourne over 100 miles, around 161 km, with just over 2,800 m of climbing and a 30-hour cut-off. On paper the profile looks runnable and reasonable. That is exactly what makes it dangerous: you can run too hard for far too long before the bill arrives on the final downs.

Race overview

South Downs Way hurts less through technicality than through accumulation. The hills can look repetitive, the rhythm changes never really stop, the terrain often remains runnable and it is very easy to spend too much energy before nightfall. This kind of 100 miler does not apply the brakes for you. You have to apply them yourself.

The other major strength of the event is organisational clarity. Centurion publishes a fully marked route, twelve aid stations, full medical support and two start waves at 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM. That clean structure makes the race very planable, as long as you do not confuse logistical clarity with sporting ease.

What you actually need to prepare

Useful preparation should target durable running economy, the ability to hike quickly without breaking rhythm, extremely stable nutrition and real tolerance for time spent on runnable terrain. You also need to test night running, damp UK shell management and a simple vest setup. These details look small until they dominate the day after 120 km.

Mandatory kit for South Downs Way 100: Centurion 2026 version

The Centurion list stays compact, but it is designed for a long, marked and potentially wet ultra.

  • Charged phone, at least 1 litre of water and a 1.4 m x 2 m minimum survival blanket.
  • Waterproof jacket, Gore-Tex or similar, minimum 10,000 mm with sealed seams, plus a whistle.
  • Primary light of at least 100 lumens and a backup light from Washington onward, plus a dry long-sleeved emergency layer and a cup or mug.
  • The right move is to train with that exact system rather than merely carrying it on race day.

Centurion can still refine the details according to conditions. Recheck the rules page before race weekend.

Logistics to solve early

The official logistics are very readable. There is accommodation in both Winchester and Eastbourne, free camping at the start line from 2:00 PM on Friday, two start waves on Saturday morning and an official shuttle back from Eastbourne to Matterley Bowl after the finish. That is an advantage to exploit, not a reason to improvise.

The key is organising both entry and exit cleanly. The project begins in Winchester and truly ends in Eastbourne, not at the finish tape alone. Depending on your fatigue level, the way home matters a lot. Runners who close that loop early almost always race with more calm.

Transport: Winchester on the way in, Eastbourne on the way out

The cleanest setup is to reach Winchester the day before and think about the return from Eastbourne before the race even starts. This is a true 100-mile point-to-point, not a simple loop.

Winchester and Eastbourne stations make the weekend workable without a car, and the official shuttle back to Matterley Bowl helps simplify post-finish kit recovery.

Accommodation: start-line camping, Winchester hotel or an Eastbourne recovery night

Centurion lists free camping at Matterley Bowl and plenty of hotel options around Winchester.

If you prefer a softer exit, planning one night in Eastbourne can be very rational. SDW100 becomes much cleaner once you stop pretending you will leave like it was just a marathon.

South Downs Way 100 timeline

Friday

Reach Winchester or Matterley Bowl, set up camp if needed, collect the bib and close the loop on the return from Eastbourne.

Saturday morning

Leave in your wave without overplaying the fresh opening section. The real risk here is spending too much because everything feels runnable.

Night

Transition cleanly onto lights, keep eating and drinking without drama, then manage Washington and the late downs with some body still left.

Eastbourne finish

Collect the drop bag, use the return shuttles if needed and do not underestimate the cost of leaving the race after 100 miles.

Turn the guide into action

South Downs Way 100 builds difficulty through repetition and duration rather than brutality. If you respect Winchester, Eastbourne, the night and your own restraint, it is a superb 100 miler for learning how to stay clean for a very long time.

South Downs Way 100 FAQ

Is South Downs Way 100 an easy 100 miler?

No. It is more runnable than many mountain ultras, but that very runnability encourages people to go too hard for too long.

Are there many aid stations?

Yes. Centurion publishes twelve well stocked aid stations, which helps a lot if you arrive with a simple and stable plan.

Why does the dry long-sleeved layer matter?

Because it has to stay dry for emergency use. On a long British night, that is not a theoretical detail.

Are poles necessary?

Not for everyone. They can help over the full distance, but plenty of strong SDW100 performances also happen without poles.

Should I stay in Winchester or Eastbourne?

Winchester simplifies race eve. Eastbourne simplifies race exit. Depending on your profile, one night on each side can be the best answer.

What is the biggest pacing trap?

Running the early downs like a short ultra. The terrain allows it, then presents the bill far too late.
