Spartathlon 2026: preparation, logistics and gear guide

A 245 km road race to be completed in 36 hours, from Athens to Sparta, with 75 cut-offs that eliminate more reliably than the distance does. The Spartathlon is not prepared like a mountain ultra: the climbing is modest, the time margin close to nothing, and the one real mountain — Parthenio — arrives in the middle of the night, at kilometre 160.

Race overview

The 44th edition starts on Saturday 2026-09-26 at 07:00 from the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street, in front of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, below the Acropolis. The official finish is set for Sunday 2026-09-27 at 19:00, in front of the statue of King Leonidas in Sparta: exactly 36 hours, and it is the final cut-off in the regulations table, at the 75th check point.

The course is run point to point, on tarmac, tracks and mountain footpaths. The organisers divide it into six sections: Corinth as far as the canal bridge (km 78.5), Nemea (km 124), Lyrkia (km 148.5), the mountain and Nestani (km 172), Tegea (km 195), then Sparta. Aid stations are placed every 3 to 5 km, and each of the 75 check points has its own closing time: arriving later means elimination, whatever shape you are in.

The difficulty does not come from the climbing. It comes from three things the official page names: the distance, the cut-off requirements and the weather. Between Lyrkia and the Sangas pass the runner climbs some 960 m in 13 km, in the dark, then drops straight down to Nestani; the rest alternates long runnable coastal stretches and the plains of Arcadia, often in full sun on the second day.

This guide gathers what the official site publishes as of 2026-09-11 and the order of decisions for a runner travelling from abroad. Access itself is settled more than a year ahead: 2026 applications ran from 25 January to 25 February 2026, and the lottery was held in March 2026.

What you actually need to prepare

The Spartathlon is run, not hiked. With low climbing spread over 245 km, the average needed to stay ahead of the cut-offs is that of a long road race, not a mountain ultra. The useful work is steady pace on tarmac for hours, fuelling on the move, and foot resilience to hundreds of thousands of identical footfalls.

Build training around the cut-offs, not around the total distance. Three markers from the official table set the rhythm: Ancient Nemea at km 122.7 closes at 23:00, that is 16 hours for 123 km; Nestani at km 170.5 closes at 07:30; Alea-Tegea at km 193.8 closes at 11:10. A runner reaching Nemea on the limit has already spent the margin needed for the mountain.

Do at least two night runs with the headlamp and reflective gear the rules require, one of them with a real 1,000 m climb in the middle, to rehearse what Parthenio asks around kilometre 160 after sixteen hours of effort. And train for heat: the Tegea to Sparta section is run on Sunday in broad daylight.

Spartathlon mandatory gear

The International Spartathlon regulations, in the 2022 revision published on the site, do not give a long list: they require few things, but they name them. Here they are as they appear, with what practice adds:

  • Article 8: head flashlight with spare batteries, plus reflective gear on the back and on the shoes. This is the only equipment the regulations make mandatory.
  • Article 3: a recent medical certificate confirming fitness to take part. For 2026 it must have been issued after 1 July 2026, and carry the doctor's name and stamp, the date, and a mention of the race.
  • Article 17: headphones, music players and any music-reproduction device are forbidden, hearing having to stay unobstructed for safety reasons. A mobile phone remains allowed in an emergency.
  • Article 17: poles are forbidden, being considered external help. This is not a recommendation, it is grounds for removal.
  • Article 9: personal items are deposited on the eve of the race in boxes bearing the number of the intended check point; the organisers deliver each box to that check point, and nowhere else.
  • Article 33: runners run against oncoming traffic. Being visible by day as well as by night is not a luxury on open-road sections.

The regulations published on the site and the instructions given at the eve-of-race briefing take precedence over any other reading, including this one.

Three gear choices for Spartathlon

Three items for 245 km of road in 36 hours, including a full night and a mountain in the middle: a light vest that carries little but carries it well, a shoe that absorbs tarmac without giving up on the Parthenio paths, and the question of poles, settled by the rules rather than by taste.

ADV Skin 12

Personal support is allowed only at the check points listed in Article 11, and the organisers' aid stations come every 3 to 5 km: you carry little, but for 36 hours. A vest that does not bounce at running pace, with room for the headlamp, spare batteries and a layer for the night in the mountains.

Not to be packed: Article 17 of the regulations forbids poles, considered external help. They stay useful in training, to prepare the 960 m climb to Sangas — but they do not cross the start line.

Logistics to solve early

The official 2026 programme spreads the week over seven days. Reception and bib pickup at the OASIS Hotel in Glyfada, south of Athens, on Thursday 2026-09-24 from 10:30 to 18:00 and Friday 2026-09-25 from 10:00 to 17:00. Technical briefing on Friday 2026-09-25 from 17:00 to 18:00, also broadcast live on YouTube, in Greek and English. The regulations make that briefing compulsory for runners and accredited supporters.

On Saturday 2026-09-26: breakfast and luggage drop-off for Sparta from 05:15 to 05:45, boarding the buses at 05:45 for the Acropolis, runners gathering at 06:30, race start at 07:00. There is no slack: the luggage drop and the bus are the only route to the start line for an international runner staying in Glyfada.

After the finish the organisation keeps runners two more days: the Municipality of Sparta ceremony on Sunday 2026-09-27 at 21:00, an event on Monday 2026-09-28 from 09:30 to 11:30 at the Sparta sports hall followed by lunch at 13:30 and the buses back to Athens, the association's reception with the medal and diploma ceremony on Tuesday 2026-09-29 at 19:00 near Koropi, and athletes departing on Wednesday 2026-09-30. A Monday evening flight home misses half of that programme.

Personal support is tightly framed: it is allowed only at the check points named in Article 11, where a supporter may hand over drink and food, help change clothing, give massage and treat small wounds. Support vehicles must be declared and accredited, and two-wheeled vehicles are strictly forbidden for following a runner.

Getting to Athens and leaving from Sparta

Athens Eleftherios Venizelos airport is the single entry point. The 1,250 € "EXTRA" package, mandatory for international runners, covers accommodation, meals and transport in Athens for four days (24, 25, 28 and 29 September) and in Sparta for two (26 and 27): domestic logistics are therefore largely handled, including the buses between Sparta and Athens.

The finish is in Sparta, roughly 220 km south-west of Athens by road. The collective return is scheduled on Monday 2026-09-28 after lunch: count on that bus rather than on a rental car, which would have to be driven back from Sparta after 36 hours of racing.

Sleeping in Glyfada, then in Sparta

The mandatory package for international runners puts everyone in the same place: the OASIS Hotel in Glyfada before the race, where reception, bib pickup and the briefing also happen, then Sparta on the nights of 26 and 27 September. There is little to arbitrate, which is good news in an already crowded week.

What remains to decide is what surrounds it: arriving a day or two earlier to absorb the journey and the late-September heat in Attica, and choosing the return flight with the programme running to Wednesday 2026-09-30 in mind.

Turn the guide into action

The Spartathlon is prepared as much like a file as like a race: a qualifying performance obtained in time, a lottery, a dated medical certificate, a whole week blocked out in Athens and Sparta, and a race where the 75 cut-offs decide more often than the legs do. Open a TrailCompanion Prep from this guide to date those decisions and follow the closing times check point by check point.

Spartathlon FAQ

What is the date and start time of the 2026 edition?

Saturday 2026-09-26 at 07:00, from the Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street, in front of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. The official race finish is Sunday 2026-09-27 at 19:00 in Sparta. Read on www.spartathlon.gr on 2026-09-11, on the home page banner, in the 2026 terms of participation and in the official programme.

What is the exact distance?

The site publishes four figures, all official: "SPARTATHLON 245 km distance race" in the 2026 terms of participation, 245.1 km at the 75th check point in the regulations cut-off table, 245.3 km at the finish line on the route page, and 246.8 km to the statue of Leonidas on the official profile. This guide uses 245.3 km.

What is the total elevation gain?

The organiser publishes none. The route page says only that the elevation ranges from sea level to 1,200 m, and describes the ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio as 1,200 m. The two detailed climbs published are some 960 m in 13 km from Lyrkia, and a rise from 640 m to 975 m in 22 km after Tegea.

How many cut-offs, and which ones matter?

Each of the 75 check points has its own closing time. The markers to keep from the regulations: Hellas Can at km 79.8 closes at 16:30, Ancient Nemea at km 122.7 at 23:00, Lyrkeia at km 147.8 at 03:10, Mountain Base at km 159.4 at 05:10, Nestani at km 170.5 at 07:30, Alea-Tegea at km 193.8 at 11:10, and Sparta at km 245.1 at 19:00.

Are poles allowed?

No. Article 17 of the regulations forbids them, along with headphones and music players: they are considered external help. A mobile phone remains allowed in an emergency.

How does personal support work?

It is allowed only at the check points listed in Article 11 of the regulations, where a supporter may provide drink and food, help change clothing, give massage and treat small wounds. The vehicle must be declared and accredited; bicycles and motorcycles are forbidden for following a runner.

How do you qualify, and how many places are there?

400 runners. You must first meet one of the performance criteria listed in chapter 2 of the terms of participation, achieved in 2024, 2025 or 2026 up to 25 February 2026, then apply between 25 January and 25 February 2026. Beyond 400 qualified applicants a lottery decides, with automatic entry for performances beating a criterion by 25 % and for veterans with ten or more finishes.

What does it cost?

450 € for all athletes. The 1,250 € "EXTRA" package is mandatory for international runners: it covers accommodation, meals and transport in Athens on 24, 25, 28 and 29 September, and in Sparta on 26 and 27, plus the ceremony and accident and medical insurance during the race.
