Trail de la Vanoise 2026: complete FR + EN TGV guide
This Trail de la Vanoise guide focuses on the Tour des Glaciers de la Vanoise: 73 km, 3,800 m of climbing and a 4:00 a.m. start on Sunday 5 July 2026 from Pralognan-la-Vanoise. It is a compact alpine ultra where valley logistics matter almost as much as fitness.
Race overview
The TGV circles a high-mountain massif without chasing extreme distance. The difficulty comes from time on feet, rocky trails, relative altitude and fast weather changes near the national park.
Pralognan is a mountain village: everything is simple if you sleep there, and much harder if you improvise an early transfer. The 4:00 a.m. start requires early arrival and a night routine already tested.

Build preparation around long power-hike climbs, technical descending and outings with the full pack. The distance/elevation ratio allows running on smoother sections, but the biggest gain is economical hiking.
Repeat at least one night or very early outing with headlamp, jacket, gloves and food. The first third of race day should not be your gear test.
Trail de la Vanoise mandatory gear
Check the official list before bib pickup. For the TGV, prepare a full alpine kit that works from the night start onward.
- Breathable waterproof jacket, warm layer, hat or buff, gloves and emergency blanket.
- Primary headlamp with spare battery or cells for the 4:00 a.m. start.
- Charged phone, whistle, ID, personal cup and emergency food reserve.
- At least 1.5 L water capacity, electrolytes and bottles that are easy to refill at aid stations.
- Stable shoes for rocky terrain, poles if you use them well, sunscreen and sunglasses.
The park and altitude make weather variable: carry the required kit even if Pralognan feels mild at bib pickup.

Logistics to solve early
The TGV weekend runs from 3 to 5 July 2026 in Pralognan-la-Vanoise. The flagship race starts on Sunday morning, so bib, lodging, breakfast and pack must be ready the day before.
The format is simpler than a 100-mile ultra, but the valley limits last-minute options: book transport, confirm bib-pickup timing and leave margin for mountain roads.
Transport: Moûtiers then Pralognan
The most practical train station is Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains. From Moûtiers, reach Pralognan by regional bus, seasonal shuttle, taxi or carpool; check timetables because they are not designed for a 4:00 a.m. start.
Useful airports are Geneva, Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, Chambéry and Grenoble depending on flights. For a short weekend, a rental car or shared transfer simplifies the final valley leg.
Accommodation: sleep in Pralognan
Pralognan is the best base: you can walk to the start, shower after the race and avoid a mountain drive while tired.
If it is full, check Bozel, Champagny-en-Vanoise or Moûtiers, but plan a sober driver and a very wide morning buffer.

Turn the guide into action
Trail de la Vanoise rewards simple preparation: sleep in the right place, start protected, hike fast and stay patient. With that base, the TGV becomes a big mountain day rather than a chain of surprises.
