Race preparation guide
Trail du Mercantour 2026: complete FR + EN guide
Trail du Mercantour lines up roughly 80 km and 5,200 m+ from Saint-Martin-Vésubie: an alpine ultra with Mediterranean heat, deep valleys, ridges and rocky terrain.
Race overview
The race requires two adaptations: running long in the mountains and handling possible Alpes-Maritimes heat. Climbs are long, descents technical and hydration can quickly become the limiting factor.
Saint-Martin-Vésubie gives direct access to the Mercantour, but it is still a valley destination. Transport, lodging and time margin must be organised before focusing only on training.

Prepare for the 80K with long climb blocks, rough descending and hot-weather runs. A good strategy alternates power hiking, economical running on flatter sections and very regular fuelling from the first hour.
Test your vest with two litres of water if the weather requires it. In the Mercantour, starting light can feel pleasant early and become unsafe if an exposed segment takes longer than expected.
Recommended mandatory gear for the Mercantour
The kit must cover both high mountain and heat: weather protection, water autonomy and basic safety.
- Waterproof jacket, warm layer, gloves or arm warmers and emergency blanket.
- 1.5 to 2 L water capacity, personal cup, salts or electrolytes and emergency food reserve.
- Charged phone, power bank, whistle, ID and offline track.
- Cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, neck protection and breathable clothing for hot sections.
- Stable shoes on rocky terrain, tested poles and headlamp if your timing may run late.
Check final rules and organiser weather instructions, because water and layers may be adjusted for heat or storms.
Logistics to solve early
The referenced 2026 listing gives 80 km and 5,200 m+ in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, with a late-June date. It is vertical enough to require real mountain experience.
The village is simpler with a car or booked transfer. If you come via Nice, avoid arriving very late: the valley still adds travel time after the plane or train.
Transport: Nice then the Vésubie valley
The reference airport and train station are Nice Côte d'Azur / Nice-Ville. From Nice, reach Saint-Martin-Vésubie by car, carpool, regional bus or private transfer depending on available timetables.
For international runners, sleeping in Nice the night before is not ideal unless a very early shuttle is planned. The robust option is to already be in the valley the day before bib pickup.
Accommodation: Saint-Martin-Vésubie and nearby villages
Saint-Martin-Vésubie is the best base to limit start stress and stay close to the finish. Book early because valley capacity is limited.
Roquebillière, Venanson, Valdeblore or Nice can be backup options depending on car and timing, but every option adds a transfer constraint.
Mercantour race-week timeline
D-6

D-2
Arrive in the valley, buy final supplies and walk twenty minutes to check the legs.
D-1
Collect the bib, prepare water flasks, electrolytes and savoury food.
Start
Run economically, keep poles accessible and drink before feeling thirsty.
Mid-race
Cool down whenever possible, never skip aid stations and protect the quads on rocky descents.
After finish
Sleep in the valley or in Nice with margin, especially if you fly the next day.
Turn the guide into action
The Mercantour rewards patient runners: drink early, climb without ego, descend cleanly and keep real transport margin. Once Nice-to-valley logistics are under control, you can focus on the mountains.
