Race overview

It is a real ultra: long, rocky and rhythm-breaking, with limestone ground, repeated accelerations, dry descents and possible sun exposure in the gorges. The race rewards steadiness more than hard surges.

The Millau finish simplifies post-race logistics, but the remote Quézac start means understanding shuttles, timings and meeting points before the eve of the race. The area also links naturally with the Grand Trail des Templiers.

What you actually need to prepare

Prepare like for a limestone-plateau ultra: 5 to 8 hour long runs, back-to-back weekends, descending on dry terrain, restarting after climbs and fuelling regularly from the opening hour.

The trap is treating the profile as runnable because the altitude is moderate. On rocky ground, micro-accelerations and fast descents punish feet; test shoes, socks and hydration in warm conditions.

Recommended mandatory gear for the Gorges du Tarn

Official rules come first; this kit covers the essentials for a long trail between gorges, limestone plateaus and the urban finish in Millau.

  • At least 1.5 L water capacity, personal cup and food reserve for 12 to 20 hours of effort.
  • Charged phone, whistle, emergency blanket, ID and emergency number.
  • Light windproof or waterproof layer depending on weather, cap, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Grippy shoes on dry limestone, anti-blister socks and tape or dressing for feet.
  • Small vest or stable belt that keeps hands free on descents.

Adapt water and sun protection to the forecast: the gorges can be warm even in spring.

Logistics to solve early

The Tarn Valley Trail format lists the Intégrale des Gorges du Tarn at about 100 km and 4,460 m+, starting in Quézac and finishing in Millau. The 2026 weekend is scheduled for 2-3 May.

Because the finish is in Millau, organise clean clothes there. Check shuttles to Quézac as soon as the organiser publishes runner instructions.

Transport: use Millau as base

Millau is the logical base. It is reachable by regional train/bus connections, or by car via the A75. Useful airports are Rodez, Montpellier and Toulouse depending on available flights.

The Quézac start needs a shuttle or arranged drop-off. Do not rely on a last-minute taxi in the gorges during an event weekend.

Accommodation: sleep in Millau

Millau has the most hotels, gites, restaurants and post-race services. It is the simplest choice for the finish and recovery.

The villages in the gorges are beautiful but less practical without a car. If you stay there, confirm parking, start shuttle and post-race return.
