Trans Mont-Blanc 2026: complete FR + EN guide for running the Tour du Mont Blanc

Trans Mont-Blanc is not just a long run: it is a fast traverse of the Tour du Mont Blanc, roughly 170 km with 10,000 m of climbing, planned like a mini-expedition across France, Italy and Switzerland.

Race overview

The route follows the spirit of the Tour du Mont Blanc: a running start from Les Houches or Chamonix, then Les Contamines, Val Veny, Courmayeur, Grand Col Ferret, La Fouly, Champex, Trient and the return to the Chamonix valley. The format demands logistics as much as fitness.

The practical season usually starts in late June as the passes become more usable, but the weather remains alpine. Even without an official start arch, the difficulty feels like an ultra: short nights, booked huts, a light but safe pack, partial self-sufficiency and quick decisions if a pass turns bad.

What you actually need to prepare

Train for it like an unsupported UTMB block: two to four big mountain days, repeated downhill damage, efficient pole use and tolerance for a loaded vest. Useful sessions are back-to-back weekends, fast-hiking threshold climbs and short-sleep rehearsals.

The trap is running the first balconies like a short race. Keep margin until Courmayeur, eat from the first climb and protect your quads on the descents to Les Contamines, Courmayeur and Champex.

Recommended mandatory gear for Trans Mont-Blanc

Even in summer, carry alpine-ultra safety gear because you change country, altitude and weather in a few hours.

  • Waterproof breathable jacket with hood, warm thermal layer, light gloves and warm hat or buff.
  • Two headlamps, or one headlamp with spare battery, if any section may happen at night.
  • Emergency blanket, whistle, charged phone, power bank, offline map and ID for the France-Italy-Switzerland crossings.
  • At least 1.5 L water capacity, filter or tablets when needed, personal cup and 800 to 1,200 kcal of backup food.
  • Alpine-tested shoes, folding poles, cash/card and sleeping liner if you use huts.

Always check pass conditions, bivouac rules and hut requirements before leaving.

Logistics to solve early

The number to remember is about 170 km and 10,000 m+ around the Mont Blanc massif. The practical window opens in late June, but snow can remain on high passes.

The best plan is to secure huts before fine-tuning the athletic stages. A four-day traverse is already hard; five to seven days give better weather margin and reduce nutrition mistakes.

Transport: Geneva, Chamonix and Les Houches

Geneva is the simplest airport. Buses reach Chamonix in about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic, then Les Houches is reachable by Mont-Blanc Express train, local bus or taxi.

By rail, aim for Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet and connect to Les Houches / Chamonix. If you finish late, book a valley night instead of a tight transfer back to Geneva.

Accommodation: valley base plus early hut bookings

Sleep in Les Houches or Chamonix the night before to simplify the start. On route, classic stopping points include Les Contamines, Les Chapieux, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Champex-Lac, Trient and Argentiere.

Book huts and gites as early as possible, especially for July-August. Always keep a valley escape option if storms, a knee issue or your personal cutoff means shortening a stage.

Trans Mont-Blanc race-week timeline

D-7

Confirm huts, Geneva-Chamonix bus, insurance, long-range weather and variants if a pass remains snowy.

D-3

Arrive in the valley, buy allowed fuel and nutrition, and download offline maps.

D-1

Build the final pack, remove duplicates and check headlamp, power bank, jacket, cash and documents.

Start

Leave early from Les Houches or Chamonix, stay controlled to Les Contamines and keep the first real margin for Val Veny.

Days 2-4

Handle passes before the heat, eat savoury food regularly and decide early if a stage needs to be shortened.

Return

Sleep in the valley, clean gear and avoid stacking a long transfer immediately after finishing.

Turn the guide into action

A good Trans Mont-Blanc is about margin: weather margin, time margin, food margin and mental margin. Treat the route as an expedition race rather than a sped-up hike and the loop becomes far smoother.

Trans Mont-Blanc FAQ

Is Trans Mont-Blanc an official race?

This guide covers a fast traverse of the Tour du Mont Blanc. It is not a UTMB start arch, so huts, safety and timing are your responsibility.

How far is it?

The classic loop is about 170 km with about 10,000 m of climbing, depending on variants.

When is the best season?

Late June to September is the usual window. June and July require extra care with snow patches and storms.

Which airport should I use?

Geneva is the practical choice for reaching Chamonix and Les Houches by bus or transfer.

Where should I stay before the start?

Les Houches is convenient for the classic start; Chamonix has more hotels, restaurants and transport connections.

Do I need hut reservations?

Yes. Tour du Mont Blanc accommodation fills quickly in summer and improvising can become expensive or unsafe.

What is the biggest risk?

Underestimating logistics: unstable weather, a full hut or an empty battery can turn the traverse into a safety problem.
