Ultra Raid de la Meije 2026: complete FR + EN guide

Ultra Raid de la Meije is an exception in this trail catalogue: the Élite Ultra 113 is a timed mountain-bike raid listed at 117 km and 5,300 m+, on Saturday 12 September 2026 between Villar-d'Arène and La Grave. This guide keeps the mountain-logistics angle, but the gear and strategy are those of a very long bike raid.

Race overview

The difficulty is not only elevation. The route combines altitude, technical singletrack, rocky terrain, handling fatigue and mechanical management. Trail runners will recognise the ultra logic, but on equipment that punishes every gear mistake.

La Grave is still a high-mountain base with few last-minute alternatives. The mandatory Friday evening briefing means you must arrive before race weekend, especially if travelling from Grenoble, Briançon or an alpine airport.

What you actually need to prepare

Prepare with long mountain-bike rides on rough terrain, possible carrying, technical descents while tired and six-to-twelve-hour fuelling blocks. Cardio alone is not enough: hands, shoulders and handling focus must last.

Test tyres, brake pads, drivetrain, hydration pack and food during a real mountain day. One slow repair mid-race costs more than an imperfect workout.

Ultra Raid de la Meije mandatory gear

Check the final regulations. For the Élite Ultra, start from a mountain-bike safety base: personal protection, mechanical autonomy and cold-weather protection.

  • Certified helmet, gloves, sunglasses, charged phone, ID and whistle.
  • Waterproof or warm windproof jacket, light thermal layer, emergency blanket and sun protection.
  • Repair kit: tube or tubeless plugs, pump or cartridges, multi-tool, chain tool, spare hanger if possible and suitable brake pads.
  • Enough water capacity, sweet and savoury food, electrolytes and emergency reserve.
  • Lighting depending on timing and weather, loaded GPS track and power bank if you rely on a phone.

A bike raid at this level is rarely lost on one climb: it is lost through a mechanical, a bonk or a descent ridden badly while tired.

Logistics to solve early

The 2026 edition is listed for 12 and 13 September in La Grave. The Élite Ultra 113 starts on Saturday from Villar-d'Arène at 5:56 a.m. and finishes in La Grave, with a mandatory Friday evening briefing.

Plan as for a mountain race: bike serviced before travel, relaxed bib pickup, easy Friday dinner and a lodging return that still works if you finish late.

Transport: Grenoble, Briançon or valley car

La Grave sits on the Grenoble-Briançon axis via the Col du Lautaret. Useful train stations are Grenoble and Briançon, then regional bus, carpool, taxi or rental car depending on schedules.

Useful airports are Grenoble Alpes-Isère, Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, Geneva or Turin depending on route. With a bike, confirm bike space before booking train, bus or shuttle.

Accommodation: La Grave first

La Grave is the simplest choice for the briefing, finish and bike services. Partner lodging includes hotels, lodges and camping around the village.

Villar-d'Arène can work for the start, but confirm how you recover bags after finishing in La Grave. Le Bourg-d'Oisans or Briançon are farther away and require a car.
