Ultra Sierra Nevada 2026 Guide: the 106 km Andalusian high-mountain ultra
Ultra Sierra Nevada is the defining ultra-trail of the Andalusian high mountains. Over 106 km and 5,800 m of elevation gain, the race crosses the Sierra Nevada above Granada, the highest range of the Iberian Peninsula with the Mulhacén summit at 3,479 m. It combines spectacular altitude, potential heat at moderate elevation and a uniquely Mediterranean high-mountain terrain unlike any other European alpine race.
Race overview
The Sierra Nevada is geographically remarkable. Less than 50 km from Granada and the Mediterranean, it rises above 3,000 m with permanent snow visible from the beaches of Almería. That rapid transition from Mediterranean to alpine creates unique racing terrain and conditions: cool early mornings at altitude and potentially hot afternoons in valley floors, with schist-and-rock terrain differing from Pyrenean limestone or Alpine granite.
Ultra Sierra Nevada crosses those contrasts fully. The 106 km course passes through zones above 2,500 m, exposed ridges and descents into valleys with significant vegetation and temperature variation. It is an ultra that genuinely demands preparation for both heat and altitude — two factors that rarely combine in Alps or Pyrenees racing.

Preparation should integrate warm-weather sessions (despite the June timing, temperatures can be high below 2,000 m), altitude acclimatisation if possible, and specific work on rocky schist terrain. The Sierra Nevada may still carry snow at high altitude in early June, so gaiters and terrain familiarity are useful. Mandatory kit should be confirmed on the official site ultrasierranevada.es.
Logistics to solve early
Granada is the natural logistics hub for Ultra Sierra Nevada. The city is served by Granada-Jaén airport (domestic flights) and by Málaga airport for international connections (around 1h30 from Granada by car or bus). By rail from Madrid, an AVE service links Madrid Atocha to Granada in approximately 3 hours. The race start is at Güéjar Sierra, around 15 km from Granada, accessible by car or local transport.
Accommodation can be booked in Granada or the Sierra Nevada ski station at Pradollano. Granada has a wide hotel and rental offer suited to sports stays. For bib pickup, race village and shuttle details, consult the official site ultrasierranevada.es. The TrailCompanion Prep is useful for planning travel from France and high-altitude race strategy.
Turn the guide into action
Ultra Sierra Nevada is an ultra that stands apart from the standard alpine race circuit. If your preparation accounts for heat and altitude, travel to Granada is organised and you are curious to race in a uniquely Mediterranean high-mountain environment, this is a rewarding June objective.
