Race preparation guide
Ultra Trail du Vercors 2026: complete FR + EN guide
Ultra Trail du Vercors packs 84 km and 4,300 m+ around Villard-de-Lans, with a very early start and limestone terrain mixing fast tracks, forest paths and more technical sections.
Race overview
The 2026 edition lists L'Ultra solo as 84 km / 4,300 m+, starting Saturday 12 September at 5:00 AM from La colline des bains in Villard-de-Lans. The 18 h 30 cutoff requires steady running rather than aggressive descending.
The Vercors signature is broken rhythm: runnable sections, accelerations, steep climbs and limestone that can turn slippery. The Grenoble / Sassenage shuttle helps access, but race morning still needs to be planned like a night start.

Build training around 5 to 7 hour long runs with run-hike alternation, then add technical descents to strengthen quads and ankles. Poles help if you can stow them quickly when the trail turns runnable again.
Rehearse a very early breakfast and the first hour under headlamp. Many runners spend too much energy before Saint-Nizier; stay easy to Autrans and keep mental reserves for Rencurel.
UTV mandatory gear to prepare
Always check the official rules before bib pickup; this kit covers the essentials for a September mid-mountain ultra.
- At least 1.5 L water capacity, personal cup, food reserve and containers for aid stations.
- Waterproof jacket, warm layer, hat or buff, light gloves and emergency blanket.
- Headlamp with spare battery for the 5:00 AM start and any late finish.
- Charged phone, whistle, ID, dressing/compresses and the race emergency number.
- Grippy shoes for wet limestone and tested poles if you plan to use them.
The organiser says the GPX track is released about one week before race day because the course changes each year.
Logistics to solve early
Announced aid points include Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte, Autrans - La Sure ski area and Rencurel. That gives a useful mental structure: do not spend everything before kilometre 41.
Friday bib pickup is strongly recommended. The solo pickup window on Saturday morning is short, so sleeping on site or very close is valuable.
Transport: Grenoble first
Grenoble is the most practical railway station, with TGV/TER connections and the UTV shuttle from Grenoble or Sassenage according to organiser instructions.
Relevant airports are Lyon-Saint Exupery and Geneva, then train or car to Grenoble / Villard-de-Lans. Without a car, confirm the shuttle before booking accommodation.
Accommodation: Villard-de-Lans or Grenoble
Villard-de-Lans is the best place to sleep, collect the bib and walk to the start area. Book early because the village fills quickly around sports events.
Grenoble can work if the shuttle is confirmed, but it adds wake-up and transfer stress. Correncon, Lans-en-Vercors and Autrans are good alternatives with a car.

Turn the guide into action
Succeeding at UTV means respecting a mountain ultra without the extreme altitude of the central Alps but with lots of rhythm changes. The simpler your Friday logistics, the fresher you are for a clean run back to Villard-de-Lans.
