Race overview

UTMF / Mt. FUJI 100 is part of the Week 19 TrailCompanion guide batch. This page condenses the practical decisions to make before booking: reference format, terrain, access, lodging, gear and official links to check before travel.

The key is not distance alone. On this kind of trail, success depends on pacing the climbing, managing aid stations, adapting to local weather and arriving rested with a simple bib, start and post-race plan.

What you actually need to prepare

Build preparation around hilly long runs, controlled descents and hike-run blocks. For 167 km, you need to hike early without losing rhythm, run the easier sections and eat before intensity shuts down appetite.

TrailCompanion Prep then turns the guide into a checklist: tested kit, lodging, transport, documents and week-by-week nutrition reminders.

UTMF / Mt. FUJI 100 mandatory / recommended gear

The official organiser list always comes first. This baseline covers the realistic needs to prepare your pack before bib control.

  • Stable 12 L pack with 1.5 to 2 L water, cup, food reserve and room for night kit.
  • Waterproof jacket, warm layer, pants or overtrousers, hat/buff and gloves according to the official list.
  • Two headlamps or headlamp plus spare battery, charged phone and power bank.
  • Emergency blanket, whistle, ID, travel insurance and registration documents saved offline.
  • Protective shoes already tested on long descents, damp tracks and possible two-night fatigue.

Recheck the official rules during race week: weather, timing and gear requirements can change.

Logistics to solve early

Start logistics from Kawaguchiko, Fujiyoshida, Tokyo and the Fuji Five Lakes area. Confirm bib pickup, parking or shuttles first, then choose lodging. An early start or late return can completely change the best base.

Keep the official links in your Prep: race website, registration page, rules, access map and last-minute instructions. This guide gives the framework, but the organiser remains the final source.

Transport to Kawaguchiko, Fujiyoshida, Tokyo and the Fuji Five Lakes area

Most international runners arrive via Tokyo, then travel to Kawaguchiko or Fujiyoshida by train, highway bus or official shuttle depending on published information.

Build in a large buffer: bib pickup, gear check, jet lag, start transfer and return after a full night outside make tight connections risky.

Where to stay for UTMF / Mt. FUJI 100

Kawaguchiko and Fujiyoshida are the most practical bases near race operations, but rooms sell out early around Mount Fuji.

Tokyo can work before/after the race, not as the start base: keep at least one local night before briefing and one simple night after finishing.
