Val d'Aran by UTMB 2027: preparation, logistics and gear guide

Five days of racing in a Catalan valley that faces France, from 2027-07-07 to 2027-07-11. The VDA 163K, 163 km with 10,000 m of climbing and as much descent, is a high-mountain 100-miler in the full sense: passes above 2,000 m, two possible nights for most runners, and logistics concentrated in Vielha.

Race overview

The Torn dera Val d'Aran, VDA 163K, starts from Vielha on Friday 2027-07-09: 163 km, 10,000 m+, 10,000 m-, 100M category of the UTMB World Series. The same day, the Camins d'Hèr, CDH, start from Les: 110 km, 6,400 m+, 6,050 m-, 100K category. As of 2026-09-05 none of the eight races is open for registration: the official site shows them as available soon.

Around those two long races, the week lines up the Termières dera Libertat, TDL, 75 km and 5,100 m+ from Bossòst on Wednesday 2027-07-07, the Peades d'Aigua, PDA, 55 km and 3,300 m+ from Salardú on Thursday 2027-07-08, two 18 km SKY races with 900 m+ from Pla de Beret on Saturday 2027-07-10, the Experiència d'Aran, EXP, 32 km and 2,100 m+ from Vielha on Sunday 2027-07-11, and a 10 km in Vielha on Wednesday 2027-07-07.

This guide gives the published facts and the order of decisions for a runner travelling from France or further: road access through the Pont du Roi or the Vielha tunnel, a base in Vielha or the valley villages, a pack built for two nights at altitude in midsummer. Start times, the detailed agenda and the gear list are not published as of 2026-09-05 and are read on the official site when they land.

What you actually need to prepare

10,000 m of climbing over 163 km is more than 60 m per kilometre: the VDA is mostly hiked uphill and run downhill on steep, rocky Pyrenean trails. Train fast uphill hiking with poles, long descents on technical ground, and back-to-back mountain days with a short night in between.

The calendar helps: in early July the snow has normally left the passes, but afternoon storms are the rule in the Val d'Aran. Do at least one full night outing at altitude with the race pack, and one outing in the rain with the jacket you will wear on race day, not another one.

Val d'Aran by UTMB mandatory gear

The official 2027 list is not published as of 2026-09-05; it follows UTMB World Series rules and will be checked at bib pickup. Prepare this base for a summer high-mountain 100-miler, then align it with the official list:

  • Two headlamps with spare batteries: two possible nights over 163 km, the first one on the very first evening.
  • Hooded waterproof jacket, long tights or trousers, gloves, hat and warm layer: at 2,000 m a July storm drops the temperature by twenty degrees in an hour.
  • Water reserve of at least one litre and food for the long stretches between aid stations at altitude.
  • Charged phone, whistle, emergency blanket, elastic bandage, ID, personal cup.
  • Poles if you plan to use them: the circuit rule requires keeping them from start to finish.

The official list and any weather kits take precedence; re-read it at bib pickup.

Three gear choices for Val d'Aran by UTMB

Three items for a Pyrenean 100-miler with 10,000 m of climbing: a vest that carries the warm layer, the jacket and the poles without getting in the way uphill, a shoe that grips rock and protects on descents, poles that will work from the first pass to the last.

Over 163 km with two possible nights, the vest must hold two headlamps, the warm layer and a litre of water, and stay stable on fast scree descents.

Logistics to solve early

Vielha concentrates the event: start and finish of the VDA, the EXP and the 10 km, the race village, and in all likelihood bib pickup, to be confirmed on the official agenda not published as of 2026-09-05. The other starts are in the valley, less than half an hour by road: Les and Bossòst downstream, Salardú and Pla de Beret upstream.

A supporter can see several starts in the same week without changing base. Early July is high summer season in the valley: accommodation and parking book up early, especially around the weekend of 2027-07-09 to 2027-07-11.

Getting to the Val d'Aran

A car is the simplest option. From France you enter the valley through Saint-Béat and the Pont du Roi, with no pass to cross: Toulouse is about two and a half hours away, Bordeaux four. From Spain, the Vielha tunnel links the valley to Lleida; Barcelona is about three and a half hours away.

There is no railway station in the Val d'Aran. By train or plane, the entry points are Toulouse, Lleida or Barcelona, then a rental car or a regional bus; plan that last leg before booking the ticket, not after.

Sleeping in Vielha or in the valley

Vielha is the simplest base: VDA finish, race village, shops and pharmacies. The villages of Betren, Arties, Salardú and Baqueira are minutes away and suit anyone with a car; Les and Bossòst, downstream, are close to the CDH and TDL starts.

July is the valley's summer high season. Confirm late arrival, a very early breakfast on start days, and a recovery night after the VDA finish before driving home.

Turn the guide into action

Val d'Aran by UTMB is prepared as a valley project and a mountain project at once: the bed in Vielha, the car and the poles count as much as the kilometres. Open a TrailCompanion Prep from this guide to date those decisions and track the agenda and the official list when they land.

Val d'Aran by UTMB FAQ

What are the 2027 races and their numbers?

VDA 163 km / 10,000 m+ and CDH 110 km / 6,400 m+ on 2027-07-09; TDL 75 km / 5,100 m+ on 2027-07-07; PDA 55 km / 3,300 m+ on 2027-07-08; two SKY 18 km / 900 m+ on 2027-07-10; EXP 32 km / 2,100 m+ on 2027-07-11; a 10 km in Vielha on 2027-07-07. Read on the official page on 2026-09-05.

Can I register?

Not as of 2026-09-05: all eight races show as available soon on the official site. The TDL offers a pre-registration.

What time does the VDA start?

The start time is not published as of 2026-09-05. Do not plan your arrival in the valley or the night before around an assumed hour: wait for the 2027 agenda.

Do I need a car?

Not absolutely, but there is no railway station in the valley: without a car, sort out the last leg from Toulouse, Lleida or Barcelona before buying the ticket.

What weather in early July?

Hot in the valley, cool on the passes, frequent afternoon storms: the waterproof jacket and the warm layer are used even in midsummer.

Are poles useful?

With 10,000 m of climbing they are the main tool on the ups for most runners. The circuit rule requires keeping them from start to finish if you start with them.

Where should I stay?

Vielha for the VDA, the EXP and the 10 km; Les or Bossòst for the CDH and the TDL; Salardú or Baqueira for the PDA and the SKY races. Book early, it is high season.
