North Downs Way 100 2026 Guide: 100 miles from Farnham to Ashford
The North Downs Way 100 is one of Centurion Running's major 100 milers. The official 2026 page lists 100 miles, 11,000 feet of climb and a 30-hour limit on a route from Farnham to Ashford. Race morning starts early: registration and tracker collection from 5:15 AM to 6:40 AM at Farnham Leisure Centre, briefing at 6:40 AM and the start at 7:00 AM, before first finishers reach Julie Rose Stadium around 10:30 PM and the awards take place on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
Race overview
The difficulty of the NDW100 comes from how deceptive it is. The terrain does not have heavy alpine severity, but it is still broken by short climbs, dry descents, wooded sections and enough runnable trail to let you make repeated pacing mistakes. It is not a flat 100 miler. It is a 100 miler that drains you through small, ordinary-looking errors.
The second layer is classic Centurion self-management. There are 13 aid stations, clearly structured drop bags and a clean support framework, but the runner still needs to stay disciplined with water, calories, daytime heat and cooler night conditions. The race mostly rewards people who can hold an almost boring pace for a very long time.

The most useful build-up combines runnable volume, hike-run work on short hills, heat tolerance and a simple vest setup. The goal is not to run fast for 20 kilometres. It is to stay stable for 25 to 30 hours with a system that does not unravel after the first few aid stations.
North Downs Way 100 mandatory kit
Centurion publishes a precise and very functional list. Nothing here is decorative, and each item answers a real long-race scenario.
- Charged mobile phone with the key numbers, capacity to carry at least 1 litre of water, and a minimum 1.4 m x 2 m survival blanket.
- Waterproof jacket, Gore-Tex or similar, minimum 10000mm+ with sealed seams, plus a whistle.
- From Knockholt Pound onward, a headtorch or primary light source of at least 100 lumens, a backup light source of at least 100 lumens, and a long-sleeved base layer or fleece kept dry.
- A personal cup is required at aid stations and should stay easy to reach inside the vest.
Pacers are allowed only from Otford at mile 54.5. Re-check the final Centurion list and forecast before race day.
Three gear picks that fit the NDW100
On a runnable British 100 miler, the priority is staying comfortable, simple and stable for a very long day.
Speedgoat 7
A strong balance of protection, grip and late-race tolerance across dry trail, wooded sections and faster running.

Not essential, but still useful for some runners if they are already integrated cleanly into short climbs and late-race fatigue management.

Logistics to solve early
The official structure is clean: start at Farnham Leisure Centre, finish at Julie Rose Stadium, 13 aid stations, drop bags at Knockholt Pound at mile 50, Detling at mile 82 and the finish, each limited to 50 x 30 x 30 cm. Pacers can only join at Otford, mile 54.5. That makes the race very readable if your bags and fueling rhythm are prepared properly.
The way back is part of the project. Awards are on Sunday at 1:00 PM and the shuttle returns to Farnham at 1:15 PM. Ignore that layer and you can end up with a good finish but a messy exit from the weekend.
Transport: Farnham start, Ashford finish
The official travel page notes that Farnham Station is about an eight-minute walk from Farnham Leisure Centre, which makes the start straightforward by rail.
At the finish, Ashford Station is about two miles from Julie Rose Stadium. That is workable for a no-car weekend if you lock the inward journey, the finish transfer and the Sunday shuttle with enough margin.
Accommodation: Farnham for the start, Ashford for the finish
Centurion lists options including The Bush Hotel and Premier Inn on the Farnham side for runners who want a simple, low-stress start.
On the Ashford side, Ashford International Hotel and Spa, Travelodge and Holiday Inn Ashford Central make practical finish-area bases if you want to sleep close to the line and travel the next day.
Race week timeline
Day before
Reach Farnham, settle accommodation, close the drop-bag plan and make sure Farnham, Ashford and the Sunday return all fit together cleanly.
Saturday morning
Be at Farnham Leisure Centre between 5:15 AM and 6:40 AM, collect the bib and tracker, hand in finish and drop bags, then attend the 6:40 AM briefing.
Saturday day and night
Start at 7:00 AM, keep the first half controlled, then use Knockholt Pound and Detling intelligently so the night stays organised and fueled.
Sunday
Finish at Julie Rose Stadium, recover properly, and if needed aim for the 1:00 PM awards and the 1:15 PM shuttle back to Farnham.
Turn the guide into action
The North Downs Way 100 is a very clean race to prepare if you like long British formats without unnecessary complexity. Respect the volume, simple self-sufficiency and the Farnham-to-Ashford logistics, and the hundred miler becomes a serious but readable endurance project.
North Downs Way 100 FAQ
Is the NDW100 runnable?
Yes, but not in the sense of a flat 100 miler. The profile is still broken enough to punish small pacing mistakes for many hours.
When are pacers allowed?
Only from Otford at mile 54.5, according to the official FAQ.
Where are the drop bags?
At Knockholt Pound mile 50, Detling mile 82 and the finish, with a maximum size of 50 x 30 x 30 cm.
When does lighting become mandatory?
From Knockholt Pound, where the rules require a primary 100-lumen light and a 100-lumen backup light.
Can I do the weekend without a car?
Yes, it is very workable if you combine Farnham Station, Ashford Station and the Sunday return shuttle with enough margin.
What is the main trap?
Running slightly too fast because the terrain invites it. The cost usually appears later, when you still have to manage the full night efficiently.
