Race preparation guide

Trail de la Bérarde 2027: complete FR + EN guide

Trail de la Bérarde - Écrins / Vénéon valley preview needs precise planning: 28 km, 1700 m of climbing and logistics centred on Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, La Bérarde and Bourg-d'Oisans. La Bérarde is a mountaineering hamlet at the head of the Vénéon valley in the Écrins. This guide uses a realistic alpine-trail preview format: valley paths, moraine, footbridges, steep slopes, exposed weather and fragile road access. The final race details must be confirmed by the local organiser before entry.

Race overview

Trail de la Bérarde is part of the Week 30 TrailCompanion guide batch. This page condenses the practical decisions to make before booking: reference format, terrain, access, lodging, gear and official links to check before travel.

The key is not distance alone. On this kind of trail, success depends on pacing the climbing, managing aid stations, adapting to local weather and arriving rested with a simple bib, start and post-race plan.

What you actually need to prepare

Build preparation around hilly long runs, controlled descents and hike-run blocks. For 28 km, you need to hike early without losing rhythm, run the easier sections and eat before intensity shuts down appetite.

TrailCompanion Prep then turns the guide into a checklist: tested kit, lodging, transport, documents and week-by-week nutrition reminders.

Trail de la Bérarde mandatory / recommended gear

The official organiser list always comes first. This baseline covers the realistic needs to prepare your pack before bib control.

  • Waterproof jacket, warm layer, buff, light gloves and thin hat: the valley head can switch quickly into alpine weather.
  • 1.5 L water reserve, filter or tablets if required, personal cup and enough food between spaced aid points.
  • Charged phone, whistle, emergency blanket, ID and GPX track if the organiser provides one.
  • Shoes with grip on wet rock, moraine, alpine dirt and footbridges; poles are useful if allowed.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, cap and a small foot-care kit for strong exposure above 1,700 m.

Recheck the official rules during race week: weather, timing and gear requirements can change.

Logistics to solve early

Start logistics from Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, La Bérarde and Bourg-d'Oisans. Confirm bib pickup, parking or shuttles first, then choose lodging. An early start or late return can completely change the best base.

Keep the official links in your Prep: race website, registration page, rules, access map and last-minute instructions. This guide gives the framework, but the organiser remains the final source.

Transport to Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, La Bérarde and Bourg-d'Oisans

Access starts from Grenoble, then Bourg-d'Oisans and the Vénéon valley. Seasonal buses, taxis, car shares and high-valley roads must be checked close to departure, especially after bad weather.

A car simplifies the last section, but parking in the hamlets is limited. Keep a large buffer for roadworks, traffic restrictions, rockfall risk and weather conditions at the valley head.

Where to stay for Trail de la Bérarde

La Bérarde and Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans offer the right atmosphere but very few beds: huts, gîtes and small places fill as soon as the summer calendar opens.

Bourg-d'Oisans gives more options and services, but adds a valley drive before the start. For an early race, staying high in the Vénéon is the calmest option.
