The official Grand Raid runner guide lists a long but highly pragmatic mandatory set for a long night race in semi-self-sufficient mode.

  • Race pack, identity document, whistle, reachable mobile phone and emergency blanket.
  • Personal 15 cl cup, cutlery kit, at least 1.5 L of water and a food reserve.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries or USB charger, second warm layer, reflective armband and a breathable jacket with 10,000 Schmerber suggested.
  • Poles remain optional, but if you use them they must carry protective tips. A heat-wave kit can also be activated.

Logistics to solve early

The organisation gives runners solid logistics if you actually follow them: village in Vannes, shuttles leaving from Chorus, accommodation spread around the gulf and a dedicated Grand Raid runner guide. The classic mistake is underestimating the size of the race weekend. Between bib pickup, the pack presentation before the start and the exit after 175 km, it is better handled as a full event trip than as a simple in-and-out race.

The other key point is the crossing between Port-Navalo and Locmariaquer. It breaks rhythm in a way few ultras do: fifteen minutes on a rigid inflatable boat, then back to running cleanly on tired legs. The official transport page strongly pushes lower-impact mobility. Vannes bus station sits 1.5 km from the town centre and 3.8 km from Parc des Expositions Chorus, the core of the race village and shuttle network.

Shuttles run from Chorus in Vannes toward several race starts. They need to be reserved in advance through registration and the ticket is then collected at the village during the event.

Accommodation: Vannes for simplicity, the whole gulf for atmosphere

The official accommodation page groups partner hotels, guesthouses and campgrounds around Vannes and the gulf. Staying in Vannes keeps bib pickup and the Grand Raid start much simpler.

Staying further away can be pleasant if you are making a longer Brittany trip, but it adds friction to a race that already begins in the evening. For a first attempt, simplicity usually wins.

Reach Vannes, collect the bib, present the pack if required, reserve shuttles and close the loop on your post-race logistics.

Friday evening
